Michigan may be best known for its auto industry, its college football teams, and its contributions to the art of office-furniture manufacture. The fact is, though, that this mitten-shaped Upper Midwestern state has made great contributions to American arts and culture-and all sorts of positive signs, from the growth of downtown Grand Rapids to the sudden explosion in Detroit-based visual arts, suggest that Michigan plans to remain one of the cultural capitals of the United States.

And that place is well-earned. After all, this is the state where Motown Records was founded, where punk rock pioneer Iggy Pop, filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, and author Nelson Algren hail from, where the classic Anatomy of a Murder was filmed, and where Ernest Hemingway set his first published story. Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Gilda Radner, and Lily Tomlin were all born here, Elmore Leonard calls the state home, and Sufjan Stevens made his name as the leader of West Michigan-based band Marzuki.

Michigan has an important place in film history, too. It provides backdrop for such films as The Evil Dead, Four Brothers, Grosse Pointe Blank, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, RoboCop, and 8 Mile. A recent bill enacted by the Michigan legislature ensures that the Wolverine State will continue attracting quality film productions, luring famous and unknown film artists alike with a forty-percent across-the-board refundable tax credit, a loan program, and other goodies. (A complete list and application are available from the Michigan Film Office.) This incentives package, coupled with the state’s unique geographic diversity that allows it to “stand in” for many kinds of locations (urban, mountainous, forested, coastal), makes Michigan one of the most attractive possible shooting locations in the United States. But filmmakers should also note the state’s lively film-festival calendar-a mere sampling of which is provided below.

In the Detroit area alone, we have a plethora. Royal Oak offers the results of the innovative 48 Hour Film Project every July, after teams of Detroit-area filmmakers spend a forty-eight hour period writing, shooting, editing and scoring an entire film, using just a prop, line of dialogue, character, and genre which must be included in the film. Similar projects are done in fifty-four other cities from around the world, and Detroit’s version features robust participation from area filmmakers.

And in December there’s Dearborn’s Annual Arab Film Festival, hosted by the Arab American National Museum. Given the impact that filmmakers from Arab cultures have had on the art form in recent years-Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami is regularly acclaimed as one of the great artists of world cinema, and films from the region are often cited as influences by such directors as Werner Herzog and Michael Haneke-this is one festival not to miss, since today’s Arab film festival entry may be tomorrow’s influential new classic.

Other possibilities for the discerning Michigan cineaste include the long-running Ann Arbor Film Festival. The lower-Michigan city of Ann Arbor is something of a regional cultural capital-it supports one of the world’s best research universities in the University of Michigan, and it has all the bookstores and museums you’d expect of such a place-so it’s no surprise that it’s also the home of one of the oldest, best-established, and most vital film festivals in the country, which continues to attract artistic experimenters from all over the world. Early work by Lawrence Kasdan, George Lucas, Andy Warhol, and Gus Van Sant, among others, has appeared at this festival (one of Variety’s top ten “Festivals We Love”); it’s the place to catch works by tomorrow’s trendsetting young film directors-today.

For filmmakers and their personnel visiting any of the above festivals (and many more every year in places such as Traverse City, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Mt. Pleasant), the state offers an excellent transit infrastructure experienced in handling film and television productions. For example, Checker Sedan-the company that most recently handled transportation for SuperBowl XL, and the official transportation provider for the Detroit Metro Airport-has years of experience in dropping off dailies, picking up stars, and every other kind of work associated with film and television production.

So you’ve finally put together a great script, a team, and have even shot some of your scenes. You’re beginning to think about Post-Production, the editing and final touches to your film… and whoa, what about the music? Should you hire a composer? What about a music supervisor? What to do?

So many filmmakers find themselves in this position. As evidenced by any visit to a filmmaker’s industry panel or workshop, there is inevitably someone who is 90% finished but still has not thought about where to get the music either original custom scoring or licensed songs and soundtrack.

So with that in mind, here’s a quick overview of how to match music to your film.

1) Who is the intended audience?

Who are you aiming for to watch your film. The tighter your focus the better. Don’t just say everyone. Really think about who would most enjoy and even tell others and promote and evangelize your great work. These are your die-hards and your core audience. After all, creating something is about connecting with your audience. Who is your audience?

2) What emotion do you want to convey?

Music is cool in that it is invisible and yet so powerful. It’s like the magic weapon of master communicators. Just look at the advertising industry. 99% of the 30 second television spots have music or some form of enhanced sound design acting as music. The music is what carries the emotion. It bypasses the logical, judgmental left brain and goes straight to the core of emotion. You wouldn’t see people crying in the movies without the music – guaranteed. You can try this experiment at home. Watch some horror flick or thriller and turn down or even mute the sound. You wouldn’t be jumping in your seat. In fact, here’s a great test. Turn on a film like Friday the 13th with the sound off. Then, turn on a CD of something like Django Rheinhardt or Dixieland swing or some thing like that song by Katrina & the Waves & “Walking on Sunshine”. Pretty interesting juxtaposition. And this is what music supervisors and composers do all the time. They think about what the subtext of the scene and the entire arc of the film is and they match it musically.

3) Limit Your Universe.

Now you need to limit the choices of music/emotion you want to communicate. In a scene by scene list, you can start writing keywords. For a thriller, you may want to write words like fear, anxiety. There needs to be a release from the tension somewhere too. By creating this list prior to your spotting session, you have a way of communicating to your team whether that’s your editor, a composer, producer, music supervisor, etc. The spotting session is where you watch the film scene by scene and discuss where music should be and, just as important, where there should be no music.

4) It’s All About Timing

The late great film composer Jerry Goldsmith remarked, “It’s all about the timing.”80% of the job is carried by matching the tempo of the scene. This starts to get pretty specific and each composer or music supervisor will have their own take, but generally there is an established rhythm to a scene based on the edits and the overall context of where we are in the story.

Andrew Ingkavet is a film composer, music supervisor and Head Monk of 300 Monks, an audio agency providing music services to film studios, ad agencies including an online Royalty Free Music library. Read more on matching music to film.

Cameras – There are many camera options available.

Film stock cameras of 35 and 16 Millimeter are still preferred over digital by many film makers. Remember though that this is visual art so getting the emotions of your actors can be done with any camera so keep honing your skills at getting good performances from your actors.

Lighting is always important for the best quality footage from all cameras. Instead of buying an expensive camera for a production, you may consider renting one. There are many companies that also offer crew with their equipment of course at an additional cost.

In my opinion, if there is debate over whether to use Film stock or digital for your project and you want to push this as a major motion film, unless you are using a Red, a Viper or a Sony F23, go with 35mm Film stock and use a good quality lens.

The main reason for this is that unless you are a director already established and with a reputation, using digital video may be considered “Not as Professional”. This is a stigma that video unfortunately still has, especially with people trying to break into the industry and who tend to only use video.

You’ve worked hard and done your best to make a film. If the 35MM project costs more to shoot then sell it for more when it’s finished. There are deals to get 35 film stock if you are a student. Get a student ID by enrolling in a community college.

Shoot in 35mm but do the cutting/editing in digital. You can get the 35 mm transferred to digital via a process called Telecine. If you still want to use digital video go with a good(The best you can afford) high definition camera. Right now my preference under 10,000 would be the Panasonic HVX 200A.

The Sony PMW EX1 is also getting very good reviews although the HVX200A is a bit more popular.

For you who are adamant about using digital video I will mention a couple of things about some high end digital video cameras. The camera that George Lucus used on Star Wars was a Sony HDW 900 modified by Panavision with a new lens and control. Sony came out later with the HDC 950 which was an improvement to the 900.

Currently, Sonys highest standard for shooting feature films with digital is the F23. Another two exciting digital cameras are the Red and the Viper. The Red is advertised to be the cheapest of the three and boasts to have the highest quality.

For the pro line of lower end camcorders you may consider a 35mm lens to give you a good depth of field. Because cameras go out of date so quickly, do to ever evolving technology, you may consider renting for a project.

From entry level up to high end cameras keep in mind that due to many people having access to large screens, high Definition (HD) is becoming the norm. Standard Definition can appear a bit grainy on these larger screens.

If you are going to try to sell your video project to a TV company, some are only accepting High Definition. Go get your film made.

Do you have the interest to shoot a short movie? Now it is very easy to make a short film, for you can buy editing and production tools from retail or online stores. Sure, you can also rent professional cameras to shoot the short film, and there are many rent stores online too. If you have no idea of shooting a short film, you can also find plenty of articles and videos about how to create a short film. Here you can learn ways to shoot a short documentary. You’ll need a digital video camera and audio recorder; moreover, you also need to install video editing software in your computer.

As you are going to shoot a short documentary, you need to choose a topic that can quickly arouse people’s attention and interest. Search for your favored subjects from internet, books, magazines, news papers or people around you. Whether you choose unusual events or ordinary people’s everyday life, you should have to be interested in the subject. If the movie director does not like his movie, the audience will not want to watch the movie either.

After you have decided on a subject, you have to do researches and collect as more materials as possible. For example, if you are going to shoot a documentary about a living person, you can ask for photos and take talks with people around him or her. Make sure that your subject, such as a living person or the family agrees to be a part of your short documentary. Before you are going to interview the subject or other relevant people, you should create comfortable atmosphere to make your subjects comfortable.

Though you can get much footage by interviewing different people, you also need to write a narrative story to tell the audience informative and necessary background information. Ask your actors to read the narration, and you should ask him or her read the material with the tone and pace that fit with the short video. Of course, you can also read the narration by yourself, and that be very interesting to do this work and hear your voice in your video.

Do post-production work to finish the short documentary. You can either edit and assemble all of your footage on your own or hire a professional editor to edit a video as you desire. Actually, you can use the footage to produce different types of video. Try your best to make a short documentary and the audience will see your sincerity from your work.

As a college student life on a budget is my middle name. As a film major no-budget is my last name. I’ve learned quite a bit about what works and what does not work when you have limited funds. I’m going to discuss the basic equipment needed as well as what happens in the different phases of production. If you have an interest in making movies or maybe you’ve just embarked on your journey to film school, here are a few basics to starting your filmmaking journey.

First, you need a camera and depending on if you’re looking to make films professionally or home videos, they can be pretty pricey. Red Epics and Black Magic cinema cameras are great finds, for a pretty penny that is. DSLRs are perfect for beginner filmmakers because they’re inexpensive compared to the thousands of dollars spent on cinema cameras. You should choose a camera that shoots in 1080pi at 24 frames per second. For a cheap find I recommend the Canon Rebel EOS T3i with a basic lens kit. A basic lens kit usually consists of an 18-55mm lens. After you’ve purchased your camera it’s time to invest in a 3 point light kit which consists of your key light, fill light, and back light. You will also need to purchase sound equipment such as a shotgun mic that you can mount on the hot shoe mount that is on most DSLRs. You may not think lighting and sound are important to a film, but they can make or break your film. Would you rather watch a movie with a good storyline but you can’t see the actors’ faces or actions and can’t hear what they’re saying? Or would you rather watch a movie that’s storyline isn’t the best but has adequate light and sound. You should be able to see the actors and their actions clearly and you should be able to hear footsteps if the actor is walking. When you are ready to write your script start with the treatment. The treatment will help conceptualize your idea from beginning to end. Once you have done that you can start your script.

There are three phases of production: pre-production, production, and post production. Pre-production is crucial to any film as it can fall apart without it. In pre-production actors are cast, locations are scouted and secured, costumes and sets are designed, and a shooting schedule is created. If a film is a period piece such as World War II, procuring locations and costumes are an essential part of the pre-production phase since it helps place a time frame on the film. Next comes production when the film is being shot. Director and director of photography of a film is hired during pre-production but more than likely if you are a film student or a hobbyist you will be directing and filming your own movies. After everything has been filmed it’s time for post-production where the film is edited into its final product. I recommend Final Cut Pro for Macs and Adobe Premiere Pro CC or the Adobe Creative Suite for editing.

If you’re college students you are probably relying on your college’s theatre department for actors looking for experience. Your crew members probably consist of friends or fellow film majors or enthusiasts. You may not be able to afford to pay your cast and crew, but make sure to provide them with craft services i.e. food and beverages to keep them happy. Something to look out for with your film, especially if your actors or crew members are not paid, is never trust talent. I can’t tell you how many times actors have not shown up on shooting days because they didn’t make the film a priority since it was essentially a volunteered service. You may have to remind your actors that what they are being paid with is more valuable than money: experience.
